What makes a good case
A flat base, a zip that opens across three quarters of the length, a lining matched to what goes inside. The rest is decoration. A case that will not stand up, that half opens, or whose lining stains at the first melted balm ends up at the back of a drawer.
Choosing by use
Makeup and toiletries
Coated canvas lining, flat base, wide opening. The most requested format for weekends: it swallows a lot and cleans in ten seconds.
Pencils and desk
Flat format, more compact, cotton lining. About ten pens, a short ruler, an eraser, and there is still room for a highlighter.
Cables and small electronics
Quilted preferably, for cushioning. The wadding between the two layers protects connectors from knocks inside a bag.
The parts that fail first
The zip ends, always. That is where the pull happens when you open it sharply. On the studio cases, those ends are lined with a small fabric tab and topstitched twice.
Care
Outside by hand or machine at 30 degrees in a mesh bag depending on the model. Coated inside: damp sponge. Dry flat, never in a tumble dryer.

What size for a wash bag? +
Around 22 × 12 × 9 cm for weekend use: a foundation, a few brushes, a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste fit without forcing. Beyond that, move to a two compartment case.
What does a flat base change? +
Everything. A flat-based case stands on a sink or a desk, stays open while you look, and does not tip over when you let go. A flat case is more compact but forces you to empty it.
Which lining should I choose? +
Coated canvas for makeup and toiletries, plain cotton for pencils and cables. The coating wipes clean with a sponge and tolerates small leaks, which a cotton lining does not forgive.
Do pencil cases survive a school year? +
Yes if the zip is set on wide tape and the seams are topstitched, which is the case here. The classic failure points are the zip ends: they are lined and reinforced.
Can I order a case in a specific fabric? +
Yes through the custom made option: you pick the model, the outer fabric and the lining, and you approve a photo before it ships.
